by Ken Robinette, Executive Director, SCCAP:

On May 25th, SCCAP became the recipient of a new dedicated flag pole which was installed by Rylee Olson of Troop 42. Rylee selected SCCAP for his Boy Scouts Eagle Scout project. Rylee is the son of Jerry Olson, SCCAP Board Member and Secretary of the Board of Directors.

Rylee’s project was dedicated and celebrated just before this Memorial Day weekend and competed a 10 year journey for SCCAP. In Nov. 2003 when we had our new building dedication and ribbon cutting we were presented with an American Flag that flew over the United States Capitol by US Congressman Mike Simpson. We could not fly that flag as a flag pole was not able to be part of our budget when our facility was built, until this day of May 25. 2013.

As we celebrated the hard work and symbolic importance that Rylee and his fellow Boy Scouts and Scout Leaders did to erect our new flag pole we were also honored by our military veterans of the Henry D. Lytle Post 2136 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Chief Bob Jackson of the US Navy ceremonially passed the flag to Det. Adjutant Marine Corps Jimmy Berkley who in turn presented it to Rylee Olson and with assistance of his Troop 42 Boy Scouts raised the flag after we had it blessed by VFW Chaplin Colonel Phil Kissinger.

Others that helped celebrate this wonderful event was Senator Jim Patrick (guest speaker), House Representative Maxine Bell, SCCAP Board Members; Delores Brewerton, Jerry Olson, Alvin Chojnacky and Dixie Adams and SCCAP staff; Jenny Randolph, Kayleen Benedictus and Randy Wright. We were also joined by many family and friends that attended in making this a very memorable day. We would also like to thank all the other businesses and individuals that helped make this project happen. Lowe’s Building Supply, Memorial Monuments, Westphal & Son’s, 4 U Construction, Platt Electric, Idaho Concrete and the SCCAP WZ staff Rod Burk, Ed Campos, Chad Urie, Zach Ivey, Nate Baird & Self Help Housing Chad Whitaker.

And a very Special Thank You to Rylee Olson, we are very proud of our new flag pole and now have the honor and pride of flying our American Flag.

DATE: 25 February 2013

SUBJ: Season Ending for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program February 22, 2013

CONTACT: Christina Zamora or Alice Beattie, 208-375-7382

As the funding for the federally funded 2012/13 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program has been exhausted, applications will not be accepted after the close of business, Friday, February 22. The mission of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is to assist low income households, particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a high proportion of household income for home energy, in meeting their immediate home energy needs. Idaho received over $17 million in LIHEAP funding this year, and served approximately 41,222 low income Idaho households.

In partnership with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Community Action Partnership Agencies throughout Idaho have been taking LIHEAP applications and processing benefits for almost 30 years, and began this season the first part of October, 2012.

“This year was an incredibly difficult year for tens of thousands of Idaho families. We could have easily served twice as many as we did had more funding been available.” — Christina Zamora, Executive Director, Community Action Partnership Association of Idaho

For information on other resources that may be available to low-income Idahoans struggling to meet their home energy or other needs, please call 211 or go to www.idahocareline.org.

You may also visit idahocommunityaction.org for more information on Idaho’s Community Action agencies and their programs.
